How I got my name StarHawk, by Raquel Starhawk.

“For the longest time I felt I had no place, I felt something was missing and I was on an endless quest of searching and validation.

I craved a soul name, not for ego but for purpose. At the time, I was, still am - and will probably always be, a bit of a lone soldier in the sacred quest for the light. Back then the only name I felt could encompass how I felt in the world was Lonely Heart. Thank goodness we don't name ourselves.

My teacher at the time - Katharine Lee (Teach), Principal of Katharine Lee’s School of Holistic Healing, invited me to do a sound journey for one of her gatherings.

A fair amount of people came, and the sound journey went well. Teach went straight into trance and journeyed into different past lives, to the point she couldn't really recall the sound journey.

Once it ended, I did what any smoker would do, I went outside for a well-deserved smoke break. Teach popped out quickly to her house to collect something.

There I was, sitting on the grass chatting with the other participants and Teach appeared, giant feather in hand.

She said, “Please Rise.”

I got up and she looked deep into my eyes.

She said, "Raquel, you have done so well. You have been waiting for this for a long time. Your name is StarHawk. Welcome home."

Well, what could I say, the tears rolled down my face in disbelief. She used the feather as a king would use a sword when knighting a soldier.

So unceremonious. No fuss, formality or fluff, pure intuition, and intention in the moment. I cried, oscillating between joy, disbelief, and gratitude. Later that day, as she was still in trance space at the time, as she slowly returned to ordinary reality, she had to ask me what she said and what she had named me. 

And finally, that was enough for me. I was initiated by spirit in a way no piece of paper could provide, and I changed my name across all platforms (it did take a fair bit of vulnerability to share it out into world).

The reason I could not use Starhawk on its own is because there is a very well-known Author & Spiritual Elder who has the name. I love that she and I share many traits. She is a spiritual leader, activist, feminist and eco warrior who promotes permaculture and land-based spirituality.

So, there it is, teach said that when you change your name, your life changes. And that it did, that day I finally stepped into what I was always meant to be, a shamanic healer.”
